Pedagogy

You must have clear expectations and methods when using this strategy.

1) Consistency! Students who struggle with reading tend to lose momentum with long breaks between readings. So... READ, READ, READ!

2) Model! Read with the kids and have them evaluate your reading.

3) Students need be honest with themselves and their peers. One thing students like to do is to inflate their self-evaluations. You have to take the time to show them how to proper evaluate themselves using a rubric. You can use a paper copy, or you can set an online google form for the students to submit their evaluations digitally.

2) Students need to respect each others readings by being encouraging and constructive. Kids don't know how to give helping hands to their fellow classmates, so we have to show them how to make comments and suggestions without sounding harsh or critical.

3) Keep the goal in mind! The goal is to enjoy reading! A lot of times, kids will say reading is dull or stupid, but really they struggle with reading a text, so they tend to give up. Apathy is a really easy scapegoat out of pushing yourself. These activities, while short and focusing on fluency, will help the students grow to comprehension.
